Frequently asked questions

Sculptra® Aesthetic injectable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is made with biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body and helps to rebuild lost collagen through a series of treatments.

Collagen production in the body decreases as you get older and/or are exposed to the sun. Wrinkles are one of the first visible signs of this. Sculptra® Aesthetic is injected into the deep layer of the skin where collagen naturally exists and is made. Sculptra® Aesthetic works by initially filling a wrinkle with small PLLA beads. As the beads biodegrade the body may produce new collagen where Sculptra® Aesthetic is injected.

Once injected Sculptra Aesthetic begins working with your body deep within the dermis layer of skin to help stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production over time, helping to reinforce skin’s inner structure and increase facial volume that has been lost due to aging.

Sculptra Aesthetic works subtly and gradually over time within the deep, dermis layer of the skin, correcting shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds such as smile lines for a more youthful-looking appearance.

Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, which work immediately upon injection to fill in lines, wrinkles and
folds, Sculptra Aesthetic is made from Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which helps stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production over time, helping to reinforce skin’s inner structure and increase facial volume that has been lost to aging. Poly-L-latic acid (PLLA) is a biodegradable substance that has been proven safe and has been used in medical products, including dissolvable sutures, for more than 30 years.

Collagen is a strong, flexible fibrous type of protein that is found throughout our bodies, including our bones, muscles, tendons and in the middle or dermis layer of the skin. Under a microscope, collagen looks like bands of rope bound together or stacked logs. It acts as skin’s support structure or scaffolding that helps maintain skin’s shape In fact, 70% of our skin is composed of collagen.

As we age, our body’s collagen production decreases. The cells in our body that produce collagen, called
fibroblasts, are no longer able to produce it as efficiently as they once did, and existing collagen becomes fragmented, bent and frayed.

Age-related collagen loss weakens the skin’s inner structure, reducing its ability to maintain elasticity and moisture. Gradually, skin loses its youthful bounce, leading to lines, wrinkles, and folds, as well as a loss of skin volume and support. Think of collagen like springs in a mattress. Over time, the springs weaken and the mattress on top starts to sag and crease. Similar changes in our skin happen as a result of both natural aging and sun exposure.

Lidocaine (local anesthetic) is mixed with Sculptra® Aesthetic prior to injection to provide pain relief during the treatment. These treatments are tolerated well. Some treatment areas may be more sensitive than others.

After each injection session with Sculptra® Aesthetic, tissue volume in the treated area will gradually build up over the following weeks and months, as your body produces new collagen.  At the time of your next session for Sculptra Aesthetic, your response to the previous treatment will be assessed and additional treatments can be performed if needed, and agreed upon to optimize your correction. Sculptra Aesthetic does not treat or cure the underlying cause or disease of tissue or fat loss; rather it is designed to improve the appearance of the affected area(s).

Most areas of treatment will require 3-4 sessions, usually at 4 to 6 week intervals, for optimal correction. Because individual responses to Sculptra® Aesthetic, therapy may vary the exact number of treatment sessions required cannot be predicted with complete accuracy.  Additionally, in order to maintain the desired degree of correction, intermittent “touch-up” treatments may be needed.

You will get detailed instructions prior to and after the procedure has been completed but one difference is, unlike dermal filler, it IS recommended that you massage in a circular fashion to the treated areas for five minutes, five times per day for five days after the injection session to promote a natural-looking correction.

Sculptra® Aesthetic (injectable poly-L-lactic acid) is indicated for use in people with healthy immune systems. The best candidates for Sculptra® Aesthetic are physically healthy and have realistic expectations about treatment outcome. This treatment is not for pregnant or lactating women. You should not have any Sculptra within two weeks of any dental work, antibiotic use, or any skin infections. Clients with a history of any auto-immune disease should contract their primary/specialty physician prior to treatment, this could affect healing process and/or results.
